Sitters and Smashers are such a fun age group of infants and toddlers. This age is sweet and silly and full of big personalities. With such young ones, their needs come first and they are totally driving the boat. Sessions unfold naturally and we are along for the ride!
As a Mom, I view these sessions as a special time and opportunity to accommodate and connect with my tiny stars. I read their cues, respect their needs and dig into my bag of tricks to get some great shots. Fortunately, with sillies and toys and frogs in my feet, kiddos tend to like me!
I completely understand that I start out as a stranger to these wee ones. Some only want their mommies to be near them and that is totally ok. The whole photo session thing is new to them and we want to make it fun and comfortable.
Little ones aren’t built to perform on command for a camera so we ditch that idea, go with the flow and have some fun together to aim for the best results. While there are no guarantees of how a session may unfold, the very vast majority of sessions are super fun and result in cherished images.
However, there are some factors that can create ideal and less than ideal times times for sessions you may wish to consider.
A separate section is dedicated to Newborns and after that are several other ideal options:
- Cake Smashes and Birthday Celebrations – Ages 1 and 2.
After newborns, the best age is when they are able to sit up fairly reliably, but not yet crawl. Hence the name Sitters!
Why not younger?
Infants in the 2-4 month range can be can still be photographed, it is just a bit trickier and often yields less desirable results compared to waiting for that sitter stage. Here’s why:
- Such young infants have a strong rooting reflex which can be troublesome in several positions when trying to take pictures.
- Reflux is common in this age group (spitting up) quite frequently, exacerbated by certain positions.
- Posing is limited when infants are not able to support themselves and they can tend to look like little blobs.
- They have more frequent and immediate needs in feeding, sleep and diapering that need to be worked around.
With that said, I am happy to accommodate these young ones, but in an ideal world, it is great to wait for a Sitter Session. Catching these kiddos before they start to crawl is perfect, because you guessed it, they can’t crawl away from the scene! But really any time after secure sitting is a great time.
Cake Smash and Birthday celebration portraits at ages 1 and 2 are common milestones to capture and ohhhhh are they fun! So much personality shows in these sessions, especially if cake is involved! It is always a mystery how they my react to a possibly messy and tasty situation!
Whenever you choose to book a session, I am very happy to work with you and create the best possible experience and keepsake images. The goal is to always have lots of fun and put the little ones first. Thank you for considering Karismatic Imaging!
